Shoreline Advisory Board aims to protect Chicago’s lakefront

The newly-formed Shoreline Advisory Board aims to protect Chicago’s majestic lakefront from erosion and other climate hazards. NBC Chicago’s Kate Chappell reports with Iyana Simba of IEC.

The newly formed Chicago Shoreline Advisory Board is responsible for reviewing shoreline conservation management plans, facilitating public education, researching, assessing, and advising on plans to protect the shoreline, and recommending proposed policies — all overseen by the Department of Environment.

The Illinois Environmental Council, which represents 120 nonprofit organizations across the state, hopes to be one of twelve members appointed by the mayor to the collaborative board.

“When you have everyone in the same room, that means things can get done a lot faster, and I also think it provides a public forum for people to see how things are actually getting done,” says IEC City Programs Manager Iyana Simba.
