Study Claims Clean Cars Act Would Benefit State Economy

(WGN-AM) - The report for a coalition of environmental groups supports passage of a state bill requiring tougher emissions standards. Thirteen other states have already adopted standards that require automakers produce cars that get better mileage and produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions.

State Representative Karen May of Highland Park says her bill to put the standards in place is nearing critical mass and she says a report showing the economic benefits of the bill could make the difference. "It is a no brainer, folks," she says, "Look at this, we've topped four dollars a gallon."
The report claims the bill would save Illinois drivers one-and a quarter billion dollars a year in fuel costs.
